The Bulldog
The Essence of the Bulldog Breed
Bulldogs are extremely precious and special animals they are great pets, but they do require a lot of attention because they are so prone to many health problems, needless to say it can get q uite expensive.
But that having been said, the negatives are all gone from this article, as these are wonderful, magnificent, beautiful creatures and can be healthy and happy if you take the time to learn about their 'special needs'. Bulldogs are actually quite small dogs, known for their hardiness and strong and sturdy stature, although the modern bulldog has changed somewhat. Bulldogs are in general very gentle and calm dogs, especially when around young children.
Yes, that is not a mistake! I did say gentle and calm dogs. Bulldogs are not generally hostile creatures and very rarely attack, this makes them excellent watch dogs, able to raise the alarm but they won’t generally attack in case the people present may be friends or relatives of their owners.
Bulldogs also have a great sense of humour. I am not sure that I can prove that to you in writing, but believe me this is true!
These dogs don’t appreciate too much exercise, nor do they take high temperatures well. In hot weather they just lounge on the couch. Laze there with him and you’ll have a friend for life.
Health and Longevity
Bulldogs are surprisingly healthy dogs with only one common affliction, that of hip Dysplasia, although this is common in many dogs.
Bulldogs can live up to 16 years, although the American bull dog is thought to have a longer life expectancy than that of the British variety. They have been known as a distinct breed in the UK since the 1630s, although there is an earlier reference to dogs called bandogs, a term used today for fighting dogs.
Build
The Bulldog is moderate in size, heavy, and built low to the ground. They are dependable and gentle.
Guard Dog
The Bulldog has excellent guarding abilities but will only bark when absolutely necessary. This breed is good with family pets, but some can scrap with strange dogs.
Facts
Nearly all Bulldogs must be born by Caesarean section due to their large heads. When these dogs are young, they are full of energy, but slow down as they get older – although all breeds are like this, it is more pronounced in this breed.
Some Pedigree Requirements
The perfect Bulldog must be of medium size and smooth coat; with heavy, thick-set, low-swung body, massive short-faced head, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. With its stocky legs set squarely at each corner of its compact, muscular body, the breed's deliberate gait has almost become a ‘waddle’.
Exercise
All Bulldogs need to be taken on daily walks to fulfill their primal canine instinct to walk. Don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Fit examples of this breed are capable of moving very quickly for short periods of time.
History
The name Bulldog, which is medieval in origin, refers not only to the robust look of a
little bull, which this dog has, but also to the power with which this dog attacked bulls in combat in the presence of big audiences before that practice was prohibited by law in the nineteenth century.
Over 300 years ago the Bulldog was created to participate in the so called sport of "Bull Baiting". During the 19th century purebreds became very rare due to the enactment of the anti-baiting laws.
Be sure that the character and the lifestyle you lead match up to those of a healthy Bulldog, whose breed characteristics are a companion dog that thrives on human company, sleeping a lot is how most people view the dog but in reality a young bulldog is every bit as active and boisterous as any breed of puppy,
If left alone for long periods they can be destructive out of boredom. Before you purchase a bulldog, please make every effort to find out as much as you can about the breed. The bulldog will usually require daily attention to his face and maybe under his tail too.
