The Saluki is one of the noblest of all hounds, and one of the most ancient, being many hundreds of years old, and possibly thousands. It is regarded as the original stock whence various other breeds in the west have sprung. This breed is considered by many to be the oldest in the world, and is thought to be the oldest purebred dog in recorded history.
The Saluki is not angular like its cousin, the Afghan Hound, but gracefully made and symmetrical, with a powerful rear and hocks low to the ground for the jumping and turning ability needed in a top coursing hound. It is a medium-sized breed with a long and regal history.
The Saluki is a sighthound and is a brother to the Greyhound. The breed is still so treasured that in the late 1960s when a bitch was brought through Iran, an escort of eight armed and mounted tribesmen accompanied her. In the country of origin, when a good Saluki dies friends come from far and near to share the grief.
The Saluki is an easy groom breed. They should, however, be brushed regularly. The Saluki is not often thought of as a good protector, but he can be and he will protect his own. To illustrate this point I am reminded of an incident which occurred a few years back, when my husband startled ours as he descended from the loft, on our ladder with a heavy load. Our Saluki was about to defend the house, with ferocity, from this strange imposter!
These are a dignified, intelligent and independent dog. They are also known to be reserved with strangers, but not fearful or aggressive.
This Saluki Is Not Sure About The Noise He Hears
It is remarkable that the Saluki is perhaps the oldest known breed of domesticated dog. Widely admired for its beauty, speed, and endurance, the Saluki historically travelled throughout the Middle East with nomadic desert tribes. The reputed habitat and actual origin of the Saluki comprised a region stretching from the Sahara to the Caspian Sea. The Saluki is an athletic breed and is is natural each one needs a lot of exercise. Do not entertain owning one unless you will daily take them on a long, brisk walk or run. They do seem the happiest when running, however their will to roam condemns many to be lost or killed when they are allowed to get free. Please, again if you intend to own one, heed this warning.
Salukis Running in the Desert
The Saluki is a hound and owners should not have high expectations on perfecting their obedience because they have a free spirited mentality that is not focused on training methods. They have been bred as sight hunters, valued for their ability to course gazelle, fox, jackal, and antelopes at amazing speeds across rough, harsh terrains.
They growing to reach 23-28 ins in height at 29 to 66 lbs. It is a pack animal and was used by the nomadic Bedouins to hunt for food; hence its ability to more be than a match to small gazelle and similar creatures over rough desert terrain.
Their coat colors range from pure black to reddish, brownish, tan, white and tri-color (white-black-tan). Today in the United States, Salukis are mostly feathered; however, the Bedouin tribes valued each type equally and often cross bred the Feathered and Smooth-haired types. Coat must develop naturally.
Breeding stock should be checked annually for eye disease and certified by the Canine Eye Registry Foundation. Breeders are spread around the country, but most are happy to discuss your requirements and will often ship a puppy or an older dog to you (at your own expense, of course).
Puppies have a tendency to have body wool. All colours are acceptable. Puppies are available from many breeders for showing and pet homes.
If you are looking for your next breed you could do much worse than the pitter-patter of tiny Saluki feet in your home. Choose breeders that are breeding their puppies for loving companions, then there is a good chance that every puppy will become first and foremost a delightful family member.
